People with fibromyalgia need not miss out on exercise for medical reasons, according to a study. Fibromyalgia is a mysterious illness, characterised by widespread body pain and exhaustion but with no obvious underlying cause. It’s been speculated that there may be some altered activity in the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) contributing to the condition. If this were the case, you might expect to see abnormalities of the SNS in response to exercise among those with fibromyalgia. Researchers in Norway have addressed this question with a study of fifteen women with fibromyalgia and another fifteen who were healthy. Their physiological responses to exercise were monitored and the researchers found no obvious difference between the two groups – save for a decrease in peak oxygen uptake. The findings suggest that physical activity, and tasks undertaken at work, need not be feared for they do not exacerbate fibromyalgia. tele-management.ca/2013/08/exercise-does-not-worsen-fibromyalgia/
