Per Hedberg, filosofie doktor i psykologi och ekonomie doktor i företagsekonomi, Handelshögskolan, håller ett seminarium på Centrum för evolutionär kulturforskning nästa fredag (den 20 september). Gender-based discrimination and exclusion from social-construction processes It is widely believed that women are discriminated against, while research suggests that, in many contexts, both men and women like women more than they like men. Besides hostility, a complementary basis for discrimination against women is perceived competence. Previous studies on interpersonal communication suggest that one way in which ethnic groups could be discriminated against is by epistemic exclusion: in communication, some people are blocked from influencing others’ beliefs. We hypothesized that such exclusion from social-construction processes is particularly important in gender-based discrimination. In an experiment in Sweden, participants communicated about targets from the private world of Gemeinschaft or the public world of Gesellschaft, and later performed recall memory tests as well as reported their liking of the targets. We found gender-based effects on participants’ recall regardless of target domain: Participants’ memories matched their counterpart’s view after communication with a male recipient but not after communication with a female recipient. In contrast, participants’ liking ratings were influenced by female (male) recipients in communications regarding the stereotypically gender-congruent domain of Gemeinschaft (Gesellschaft); whereas for communication in stereotypically gender-incongruent domains, liking was not affected by either male or female recipients. Taken together, the results are consistent with a dual account of overall greater perceived competence in males, coupled with domain qualification and sender effects when responding could be subject to strategic consideration. The study suggests a novel way to study gender-based discrimination, and provides novel leads regarding discrimination against women and men. Seminariet hålls i rum 435 (seminarierummet på plan 4) kl. 13.30. Fika serveras i köket efteråt. Välkomna!
