Perdido Elementary/Middle School recently dedicated its new Heroes Hall, which recognizes the sacrifices of the men and women of the United States Military. The school will hold its annual “Salute to Veterans” program and reception at 8:30 a.m. Nov. 5. Perdido School has been in the process of transforming areas of the school as a part of the “Leader in Me” program to encourage and motivate students, faculty and staff. “Heroes Hall” features pictures of each year’s attendees. In addition, teacher Gerri McDonald was recognized for coordinating the school’s annual “Salute to Veterans” program and reception. She has also been actively involved in the South Alabama Honor Flight, helping area Veterans with their paper work, as well as traveling as a Guardian on the flight. With her help, Perdido’s third grade classes go each year at Christmas to the William Green Veterans Home in Bay Minette, to sing carols, and deliver Christmas goodie bags. Most importantly, Ms. McDonald’s most personal sacrifice was in the loss of her son PFC Russell Stewart USMC in 2007. This was pulled off by the entire faculty and staff as a complete surprise when Ms. McDonald was asked to ‘cut the ribbon’ to open the hall.
