Performance appraisals is a greeeart tool of people development, unless u try to model it in isolation. Famed Jack Welsh of GE used it with bell-shaped curve and is well-known for firing the bottom 10% performers every year. But Welsh had meticulous systems for selections and year-round appraisals. Dont be fooled by the impressive Statistical models such as regression, Gaussian probability, blab, blab... cz they are difficult to implement in personal cases. The system had better be called Performance Measurements & Employee Development (PMED) where the focus is on all-round development. This area is discussed at length in my book #TheCharismaticLeader.
