Albert Einstein If you want to find out more and how important bees are in our ecosystem and key for pollination and biodiversity come to some of our events listed below. OCTOBER 10-19 From this Friday October 10 -19 marks Fair Food Week which this year celebrates the International Year of the Family Farmer. Activities across Australia are on the website: fairfoodweek.org.au they include workshops, farm tours, community garden tours and film nights. OCTOBER 12 BARINGA COMMUNITY GARDEN GALA DAY Sunday 12-4pm Seaforth’s first community garden will celebrate their first birthday with a unique “sausage sizzle”, featuring locally grown and organic produce. The Baringa Bush Community Garden has transformed the local area, bringing together neighbours of all ages and converting unused land which was once a dairy farm into a productive garden and community. At 1pm Dan Smailes from PNB will present a native stingless bees workshop and “bee hotel to ensure pollination in urban environments. Location: Baranbali Avenue, Seaforth corner of Fromelles Avenue. For further information: baringabush.wordpress THE MONTH FOR THE BEES: OCTOBER 23 QUEEN OF THE SUN FILM SCREENING, Thursday 7:15pm What are the bees telling us? This ground breaking film takes us on a journey through the catastrophic disappearance of bees and the mysterious world of the beehive. The ultimately uplifting film tells a dramatic story of the heartfelt struggles of beekeepers, scientists, and philosophers around the world including Michael Pollan, Gunther Hauk and Vandana Shiva. 7:15 doors open for a 7:30 start. Entry by donation of $5 for members and $8 for non-members Further details to follow for further information please contact PNB Education team leader: [email protected] OCTOBER 26 BROOKVALE SHOW from 9am Brookvale Oval, Brookvale The annual Northern Beaches Agriculture show gets off to a fine start with a sustainability section this year. PNB will have an interactive stand alongside New Leaf Nursery in this section. We will also have two honey bee, bee keepers to assist us and we will highlight our native bee art competition for primary schools in Warringah. Last year we had a great time and the kids really got interested in the worm farms. This year it will be great to see our larger stand and to view the range of sustainability stalls alongside us. We cannot do it alone and need volunteers in two hour blocks. Learn how to split hives and care for our native bees. Places are limited so please book $20 for non-members, $15 for members. Two primary schools in Warringah will win native bee hives to be well cared for in their school grounds. The art competition will be judged in early December.
