The origin of Marriage dates back to the original and first marriage in 1250 between the poor Lombard and rich Venetians to create the Holy See through a ceremony on a bucentaur off St Mark’s Square between the doge and Pope Innocent IV whereby the Papal Ring was thrown into the Sea and the words Desponsamus te, mare, in signum veri perpetuique domini (We wed thee, sea, in the sign of the true and everlasting Lord) declared Venice and the (Holy) sea to be indissolubly one.
