Pete. The tears are running down my face. You were not only a spokesman for the ages. You were one of the most down-to-earth people I ever met. I cherish the memory of my face-to-face meetings with you back in the 60s. You holding my youngest sister on your knee and singing Abiyoyo to her. You reading my mothers poetry and telling her they would make great songs. You and Ernie Marrs and my family going out to eat at the very first International House of Pancakes. You plucking along on your banjo to accompany my painful attempts to struggle through the few chords I knew to play Wild Mountain Thyme on my little Guild. The tape I had of you working out a tune for the Ride That Freedom Highway lyrics I wrote. You and Ernie performing the song at the Unitarian Church on North Cliff Valley Way. The letters critiquing my songwriting efforts. I still have the letters with your scrawled banjo signature. The tape has vanished into the mists of time. But I still have the issue of Sing Out Magazine that our song was published in. Thank you for your gift to the world. And when you see our old friend Ernie Marrs, tell him I said...Take it easy, but take it.
