Peter Jackson has failed in one great responsibility: making The Hobbit a movie that parents and children both love. Anyone who knows me understands that I have raised my children to adore fantasy stories. I have read aloud the Chronicles of Narnia as a building up to The Hobbit and Harry Potter as final bridges to the great epic that is the Lord of the Rings. Completion of the books leading to watching the movies as an exciting and age appropriately timed family activity... Peter Jackson, I hold you personally accountable for taking a wrecking ball to the purpose of The Hobbit as envisioned by its author and being a disrupting force in my conveyance of these stories. Your unnecessary and gratuitous use of violence is a disease from Hollywood that you have allowed to excessively infect this work. This criticism comes from a person whom, as an avid fan of Peter Jacksons effort on LotR, finds exceptional merit in his grand approach to using these Hobbit movies as a tool to convey the many extraneous tidbits of story extant outside of the four central books. I love his vision and the scope of the effort for The Hobbit. I am appalled that he didnt even try in the slightest to accomplish it without alienating children as a whole, much less exceptionally fantasy savvy children. I hope the second movie is better grounded in Tolkiens work in crafting it as a childrens tale.
