Peter Symonenko, first secretary of the Ukrainian Communist Party on the results of the elections: These elections should not be recognised as democratic and legitimate, ‘During the course of the election campaign the authorities, relying on armed neo-Nazi and right-wing groups, severely persecuted those who allowed himself to be different from the official point of view about the fate of the country… All means were used to achieve the end: blackmail, threats of physical violence, kidnapping and torture. The activists of the Communist Party were persecuted with particular cynicism by the oligarchic-nationalist authorities. Our candidates for deputies and party agitators were repeatedly attacked, also with the direct participation of the so-called law enforcement officers, who actually turned into subdivisions of the political police in analogy with Gestapo.
