PhD Admission open in UUM Malaysia What is Industrial PhD Programme? A large pool of PhDs has been regarded as to give impetus for sustainable growth of the economy in a country. There is a huge opportunity for researchers to resolve work related issues, problems, or find solution to problems. Recognising the importance and the positive impact that will accrue from this strategy, full-time employees from both public and private sector organisations are expected to join the Industrial PhD Programme which is more application oriented. It is an alternative to the traditional PhD, which is more inclined to knowledge enhancement. The expected outcome is that, the research should add value to the organisation through tangible (economic gains) / intangible (social) benefits, or improve / enhance organisation’s overall efficiency, effectiveness, performance, profitability and that lead to enhancement of competitiveness of the nation in the long run. Degree Degree awarded is Doctor of Management (DMgmt) from Universiti Utara Malaysia. Students will be registered under Othman Yeop Abdullah Graduate School of Business Who should enrol? Professionals, managers, administrators, engineers, practitioners and relevant full-time employees who serve companies and organisations Admission Requirements: To be eligible for admission by the University, an applicant must hold: • Master’s Degree recognized by the University Senate; OR • Bachelor’s Degree recognized by the University Senate WITH at least 8 years working experience in the areas relevant to the research topic. Application Procedure: Applicant who fulfils the above requirements can apply to UUM, using UUM’s Post-Graduate Application Form (available online at cuic.uum.edu.my). Complete application forms should be submitted with a brief research proposal, and also the approval/supporting letter from the employer. The proposal should include background of study, problem/s to be addressed, research questions, research objectives, scope, significance of research, review of the literature in proposed study area, methodology, and research schedule/gantt chart. Upon successful selection, candidates will be given an offer letter to pursue the Industrial PhD Programme. Duration of the Programme: This is a full-time Programme. However, students are allowed to be working in their respective organisations while pursuing the PhD degree. Students are given a minimum of 2 years and a maximum of 5 years to complete the Industrial PhD Programme. Supervision: Each student will be assigned to a supervisor from UUM. An industry supervisor from the organisation/industry who has substantial experience or expertise in the relevant areas of the research topic may be appointed, if necessary. Supervision and monitoring processes are to be undertaken by the appointed supervisor/s. Supervision process and thesis evaluation practices are similar to the processes and practices of the conventional PhD programme. Additional Notes: All students must undertake: 1. research at the workplace; 2. research with the topic and scope based on real problems at their workplaces, related to their jobs, and in their respective field of specializations; 3. research projects that have potentials in improving the operation, services, and management of the organisation/industry. Preparatory Courses: Successful candidates without research experience are required to attend the following Preparatory Courses related to the Industrial PhD Programme: • Research Methodology - 4 credit hours • Academic Writing - 4 credit hours Programme Fees (*subject to changes): About RM20,000 (based on 6 semesters/3 years duration). The programme fees include course fee, one-time registration fee, library fee, visiting cost of supervisors, and preparatory course fee. The programme fees quoted exclude thesis examination fee. The university reserves the right to impose continuation fees and other charges, as deemed fit, beyond the three-year of studies. The university also reserves the right to impose new structure of fees and charges without prior notice to candidates.
