Phillips Brooks trivia: By the time the great 1872 fire of Boston destroyed its Summer Street location, Trinity Church--led largely by Phillips Brooks--had already raised much of the money necessary for the current church structure in the newly drained Back Bay. Brooks, who had a lifelong love for visual art and architecture, oversaw every aspect of Trinitys design and construction, so that the completed building exudes his liturgical and aesthetic sensibility. One example of this: the Pompeiian Red which is a dominant color in Trinitys tower, and echoed throughout the sanctuary (as well as in many of our publications) was one of his favorite colors. “It were well for all who look upon the finished structure to realize how largely the living personality of Phillips Brooks concerned itself with every detail for the building, from the preliminary drawings of the architect [H. H. Richardson] to the final interior decorations of his other friend, Mr. John La Farge.” -M. A. DeWolfe Howe, Phillips Brooks
