Philomena imdb/title/tt2431286/?ref_=nv_sr_2 I really thought 2013 was awful year considering percentage of good films, but maybe I have been wrong and just havent watched the right ones. Philomena makes a good point. Steve Coogan has never been among my favorite actors, since his talent is rarely used in a right way. This usually happens with American actors, but scoring more dramatic roles is hard for those who are only known by comedians. Sandler in Reign Over Me, Steve Martin in The Spanish Prisoner, Will Ferrell in Stranger Than Fiction, Bill Murray in Lost in Translation etc. I knew Coogan can do very good job and he really did. I guess no-one had any doubt about dame Judy Denchs ability to perform. She was amazing as always, but illness in her eyes was very noticable and sad. Overall, no bad words against any actor in the film. All did their roles very well. Film was good, the story was good one, but very very horrible in nature. If I would have to list most horrible and hatable characters in films, Barbara Jefford/Kate Fleetwood will get my vote as Sister Hildegaard. My biggest saddness comes, that this story and character are not made up, but as a real person. Im able to understand that people believe different things and accepting that is one of the most important things in life, but Ill never be able to understand anger inside people and cruelties performed because of beliefs. All what happened – the story – I have no words to describe it. Just a thought. During the confession scene in States, I started to wonder if The Bible is just another lost in translation case. It really doesnt matter if you believe in god and if yes, into which one, people think that if you regret your sins, god forgives you, but I think during the milleniums, they got it wrong, it should actually be that you need to forgive to God. Probably more important for having good life than other way around. Cant say Im not a bit disturbed by the story, but it was story that needed to be told and good one. Once, stories (fables, myths, folk tales) were created to show more than dull real life offers. Should go about films as well, but over the past decade, seems that real life stories are more interesting than fiction. Quite regretful degeneration. About the film itself too. Music by Alexander Desplat was perfect. Noticable, but never took first role over the picture. I wonder if something from Pink Floyds The Wall in some way wouldnt have been appropriate there. Very clearly I noticed parallels with why Another Brick in the Wall was written. There were some great shots in the film also. Young Philomena watching the car leaving behind bars of the gate window and all the flashback videos of kids playing, mesmerizing. Is this film something thats going to be among your favorites? No, but it will be something everyone needs to their watched films list. It has a bit of everything and thats rare to see how different things work in same time. Wits and jokes, saddness and happiness – you get everything.
