Pickles is a gorgeous 4 year old Maltese cross breed. He was referred to the Medicine Department in October from Greencross Vet Narre Warren. Pickles had been referred to us as he had episodes of lip smacking, gulping, vomiting and diarrhoea. After Pickles had a medicine consult he was admitted to the medicine department to perform a barium swallow to assess any oesophageal motility and structure. Pickles was very well behaved for his procedure. He was given a mixture of food and barium. Barium is a contrast liquid that shows the condition of the digestive system on x-rays. The food and Barium passed through Pickles oesophagus with no evidence of abnormality. The test showed everything was normal so we recommended Pickles to have a gastroscopy which will allow screening for structural abnormalities of the stomach and duodenum. We can also obtain biopsies of these areas. Pickles was placed on IV fluids and given a general anaesthetic. An endoscope was used and we took biopsy samples. No abnormalities were shown on the endoscope. Pickles recovered well from his procedure. Pickles results came back as normal and he was given medications. Pickles is a very well behaved dog with a very groovy hair style! We wish Pickles all the best and hope that he continues to improve :)
