Picture it, Columbus, Ohio, October, 2008. Young 25 year old man from Rochester, NY had just moved to OH to be with his girlfriend. Theyd been dating 6 months and friends for 2 years before he moved. Long-distance friendship they never thought would be anything more and now its real. Its too real, as Im sitting in Nicoles apartment unemployed, feeling like a loser. Im picking fights with her before she can argue with me and tell me Im not shit. In full defense mode because I feel like nothing. And we argued so bad one day... Nicoles mother was over at our place and she came in the bedroom and talked to me. Im thinking, oh shit here comes her momma... But her mother came to me and said, you didnt plan this. My husband and I went through this and that man worked hard until the day he died. But when he didnt have a job, I was there the same way I was there when he did. Something will break, stay strong.... And something did break a few days later. The job I had resigned from when I moved to OH? They sent a letter telling me I had 30 days to return to my position before they accepted my resignation. And I told Nicole I said, baby I can go home and work and send you money... And she said, I didnt ask you for money I asked you to be here with me, but I understand if you need to go to feel like you contribute. But I didnt ask you for that... And I stayed in Ohio. Sent back in ANOTHER resignation letter to my job in NY. And less than 30 days later was hired at my first job in Columbus making more money than Id ever made in my life. It took me a while to understand the legacy I was marrying into.The first time I met the woman whod become my mother in law...having not talked to or seen me before she gave me a hug and said, welcome home. Nicoles adopted. And it took me a minute to realize that Im not JUST my MILs son in law. Im her son. She adopted me too of the strength of her daughters word. Thats deep. And for that, on this day?
