Pigeons - Pest or Provender? An unusual trio of buildings open near Bingham on Sunday 14 September, as part of Heritage Open Days, give visitors a chance to look back over the centuries at contrasting lifestyles through the medium of food. Only four miles separate the villages of Sibthorpe, Thoroton and Flintham, and in each of them is a very different dovecote, each one unique, from the medieval period or even earlier. Starting at Flintham Museum, or at any point along the route, the Dovecote Triangle Trail, with its associated quiz for children, can entertain whole families, bringing the historic past of this area into sharp focus. Search on the Heritage Open Days website for more detail, or go to the website of Nottinghamshire Building Preservation Trust, and click on Projects, for some background on the Thoroton Dovecote, which can now be opened to visitors after a two-year restoration project. For younger visitors the Pupton, Pulpatoon or Pie Quiz, sponsored by the Nottinghamshire Building Preservation Trust, challenges entrants to find clues at all three dovecotes to win a modest, but unique prize from the Trust. Flintham Museum and Thoroton Dovecote are open between 10am and 4pm on Heritage Open Day Sunday.
