Coomassie, today spelled Kumasi is a city in the Ashantee (Ashanti) region of South Ghana in west Africa along the Gold Coast. The fight was over control of the coastal areas and trading interests, first Dutch, then British. The medal was awarded to those who took part in the Ashantee campaign, 1873-74. Along with his named medal are household service, coronation, jubilee and state visit medals.
