Planchette: - This enables people to use a form of writing to contact spirits, it started with a small basket with a pencil attached the medium would touch the basket, make contact with a spirit, then the spirit would take over and using this would spell out things on a piece of paper. This evolved into a heart shaped planchette, with castors underneath to enable it to move, and a pencil at the tip, it is unsure who invented the planchette, according to some a French medium, named M Planchette did, but this does seem unlikely as no evidence has been found, and the word planchette is French and means little plank.
