Plant Geek III: Tee Shirt Deadline Coming Up! Register for FNGLA’s Plant Geek III by October 13 to ensure you receive a complimentary souvenir tee shirt for this annual ride/walk fitness and fun event. The Plant Geek III takes place Saturday, October 25 starting and finishing at Magnolia Park in Apopka, FL. Taking advantage of the expanding Lake Apopka North Shore, cyclists and walkers will get an up-close view of Lake Apopka and the many varieties of birds making this area their home in the fall and winter months. Participants will see a variety of butterflies and may also catch a view of an alligator snout above the water line, otters on the shore or a bobcat up a tree. Combining a focus on nature and fitness, the Plant Geek III is a perfect event for families and friends. Whether you are an experienced cyclist or a casual rider or walker, there’s something for everyone at this year’s event. The Plant Geek III offers an option of three activities along Lake Apopkas North Shore Trails. • 30 mile ride encompassing the entire trail loop • 10 mile ride from the park to the historic pump house with guide • 5K walk with naturalist guide Those participating in the ten mile ride and the 5K walk will be accompanied by naturalist guides from Orange Audubon who will point out birds and other animals of interest along the way. Friends of Lake Apopka will also be on hand to share information about the rehabilitation of Lake Apopka, one of Florida’s largest lakes, as well as current and future recreational activities available relative to the lake. The cost to participate is only $25 for those 12 years old and older. Registration for children 6-11 is $10, and those under six years old are free. The event includes participation in the ride or walk; a post-ride/walk lunch, Plant Geek III tee shirt (if registered by Oct. 13) and a free plant while they last. Plus you get to hang out with a very nice group of plant geeks! Lunch will be served following the rides and walk at the Magnolia Park Lakefront pavilion. This is a favorite part of the event where friends, family and strangers have a chance to meet, share stories and enjoy more outdoor fun. Magnolia Park offers a volleyball court, playground and plenty of play space. This is a rain or shine event.
