Play golf, help children for the holidays NORTH PORT -- Help local needy children during the holidays by playing golf on Oct. 26. The North Port Police Department will be hosting its annual charity golf tournament to benefit the city’s “Shop with a Cop” holiday program. “Shop with a Cop” helps local children who cannot normally pay for Christmas. Each child receives a $100 Walmart gift card and shops with a city police officer. In many cases, this is the only Christmas the children have, officials say. In order for the program to take place, the NPPD hosts the golf tourney to raise funds. The tourney will be a four-man scramble, beginning at 8 a.m. Oct. 26 at Heron Creek Golf & Country Club off Sumter Boulevard. Lunch will be provided after the event. Onsite registration will begin at 7 a.m., with a putting contest at the same time. Cost to register is $65 per person, or $260 per team. Register by Oct. 18. Hole sponsors are still available at $125, which includes a sign. Prizes are available on every hole, including a free car for the first person to make a hole-in-one. The event also includes a 50-50 raffle, a mulligans purchase, skins pot, goodie bags, door prizes, beverage specials and more.
