Black Africans throughout the Diaspora paid homage to their ancestors who perished in the middle passage during the slave trade period and turned their will and lives over to God. – excerpt from Reparations! Previously previewed in South Africa, Kay Benjamin will screen her original one woman play, Reparations directed by Sy Richardson at Kaos Theatre,3333 Leimert Blvd, Leimert Park , Los Angeles , Ca. A story of a young womans coming of age, Reparations chronicles the lives of four generations of African-American women – a young girl, her mother, grandmother and great grandmother – and the effect of critical events in Black History. Witness and celebrate the enduring spirit of the African-American woman in this riveting, yet funny edu-drama, drawn closely from real-life experiences. Reparations also considers the debt owed to African-Americans and the continent of Africa because of slavery. Who will repay that debt? You might be surprised at the answer! No newcomer to the stage, Ms. Benjamin has over 20 years of acting experience in the United States , including co-starring roles in feature films and television shows. She starred in the acclaimed stage play First Breeze of Summer. Her most recent television role was in the award-winning sitcom, My Name is Earl and Harry”s Law. Ms. Benjamin cultivated her acting skills at The American Conservatory Theatre and The Drama School of London, among others. She also holds a Bachelors Degree in Social Work and a Masters Degree in Public Administration. For years she has coupled her passion for disadvantaged people with her love for the arts. Ms. Benjamins passion for the arts and development has led her to establish a community-based production company called IamHeir Productions and a group called, Actors Read the Bible, where performers gathered for dramatic readings of the Scriptures presented to the general public. The arts have the ability to draw out the best in people, to develop their creative edge, and to face the challenges of their day, says Ms. Benjamin. She firmly demonstrated this belief when, after a short-term mission trip in Swaziland, she wrote a play based on her experiences in the country. HIV/AIDS is ravaging the nation, she says, but there will be a healing in Swaziland . Ms. Benjamin will in produced a dramatic reading of the play March 2014 in Los Angles , California . The play “Pray for A Healing in Swaziland” (Insindiszio Eswatini!) will be produced mid 2014. Reparations will be produced by Strike the Rock Foundation. Founded by Ms. Benjamin and her daughter, Anika, who has been living in Port Elizabeth , South Africa for over twelve years, this emerging organization provides socio-economic upliftment and empowerment to women and children worldwide through arts, culture, education, development and training projects. Proceeds from Reparations will support the Foundations empowerment projects for women and children
