How Freedom Day started - One day I was getting ready for work thinking about some challenges that lay ahead of me. And as I do every morning, I listen to music. As I tuned in the radio that day, a song came on that I was familiar with. It is sung by Lone Star and titled “Im Already There”, but the version being played was different. Overtop of the song lyrics were messages from family members of our military, describing how they were missing their loved ones overseas. In those families voices I finally realized the sacrifices they make for our country. Wiping away tears I decided we needed to do more to help our troops and their families. Why YOU Should Participate – There are many reasons you should join FreedomDay USA. When you go home this evening and your child needs homework help, remember the ones that cannot be there to do the same for their children. They may be serving overseas, or they may be at home – spread so thin by other family obligations theyve had to assume that other things get put aside. Howard Farran DDS, MBA FREEDOM DAY USA It started out as a normal morning. I was in the shower and grumbling about all the stuff I had to do that day. Then I heard a song on the radio by Lonestar titled “I’m Already There.” But this version was different. Over the song’s lyrics were messages of military family members describing how they missed their loved ones overseas. In these voices, I fully realized the sacrifices they make for our country. Wiping away tears, I decided we needed to do more to help our troops and their families. The result of that decision is Freedom Day USA. We want this to be a national “thank you” movement. On this day, dental offices across the country will give military families and veterans a day where they will receive dental care at no cost… whether it’s cleanings, extractions or fillings. Initially, the idea was to do this in our seven dental offices in West Virginia. That changed when I met with a group of my peers in the Platinum Circle. I explained my idea and showed them the video I made that goes with the Lonestar video. They eagerly jumped on board. Since then, things have really taken off. Freedom Day has gone national and expanded beyond dentistry. In addition, we’ve received inquiries from 60 Minutes, the O’Reilly Factor, the Wounded Warrior Project and a member of Congress who sits on the House Armed Services Committee. Our Honorary Committee consist of Alicia Flaum -Director of 60 minutes , 4 Star General Charles Boyd, John Oates - Musician and Moby in the Morning – National Radio Personality. Our first Freedom day was September 12, 2013 and it was a huge success. We had over 700 business participations, in 42 states, who saw 20,000 military personnel and their families and gave away over $4 million in goods and services. And this all started in dentistry. Military families have to worry about their loved one’s safety AND go on with their daily lives. Free dentistry or a free slice of pizza may not seem like a big thing, but we hope enough of these little things will let our military, their families and veterans know that we respect, admire and care for them.
