Please consider the following: I just got back from having coffee with a friend and past colleague whom I worked with at Intel. After coffee, I was heading toward my bicycle when I noticed a younger man, whos name is Daniel. He was flying sign, seeking help. I went up to him and said, I dont have any money to give, but I can go in and buy you a hot cup of coffee if youd like. That is so nice and I would really like that he said. Thats when he introduced himself to me and me to him. So, I went in, made the order and put some money on a card from the coffee shop so he could get something to eat or something else to drink when he needed. He was grateful for that, but what he was most grateful for is what followed and the thing I want you to think most about: After I handed him the coffee and card, Daniel went to shake my hand but instead I did what came naturally for me, I gave him a hug and said I hope you stay warm today. As I was getting on my bike Daniel came up to me and said, with a tear in his eye, Mary Anne, do you know how long its been since someone has hugged me. When youre homeless people stop treating you like your human and your hug made me feel special today To my family and friends: hold that sentiment in your heart today and every day as you approach people who are homeless. Think about that, more than anything: What that hug made him feel and how it would feel if people treated you like you were less than human because of your living situation.
