Three days left: indiegogo/projects/orange-theatre-presents-blood-wedding Why give? Heres why: Just as a little sampler, here are a few updates from Orange’s last six months or so... -We moved into a new warehouse space in downtown Phoenix… and transformed it into a performance venue in about three weeks flat. -Our spring 2013 project, YOU YOU SHOULDN’T COME BACK--our first show in our new space--beat both our audience AND our ticket revenue goals. -We made a short film for the Welcome Diner 48-Hour Film Challenge and won Best Art Direction. -We continued to grow our team, which now stands at a beautiful eight company members plus a cadre of other talented collaborators working on our current project. -We began work on our fall 2013 project, inspired by Federico García Lorca’s Blood Wedding (of which we commissioned a brand new translation), kabuki, Marx Brothers movies, anime, spaghetti westerns, Godzilla, and ‘60s exploitation flicks. (Trust us, it’s a cool combo.) So with all that in mind, ladies and gentlemen, we come to you on this fine day with a humble request: HELP US MAKE SOME THEATRE. But we won’t leave it at that. In fact, we’ll let you in on three little things that we think make us pretty unique--things that may just make you want to throw a few of your hard-earned bucks our way to support our fall 2013 project: 1) WE WORK ON OUR SHOWS FOR MONTHS. AND MONTHS. (AND MONTHS.) We’ve been actively rehearsing our fall show since last June, and talking about it since way before that. This long development process--including both a work-in-progress showing in mid-September and then a full production in December--gives us the chance to really flesh out our ideas, not just flirt with them a bit and send ‘em home. And we think that’s pretty cool. But wow, y’all. Seven months working on one show? That’s crazy talk in most theatres in this country. For primarily economic reasons, most theatres rehearse a show for only three or four weeks and then start getting those butts in seats. But we’re not most theatres. See, here at Orange, we are trying to create a different model for performance-making, one that gives us a fighting chance to make new work and take real artistic risks. And that takes time. So we put in the time it takes. 2) WE ARE NOT TRYING TO SELL YOU ANYTHING. That’s right. At an Orange show, you’re going to find something pretty darn rare in our world… an hour or two where no one is trying to sell you something. Our shows are weird (yes, we know you think so, it’s ok), but one of the things we’re proudest of is that we try to create art that doesn’t feel like it’s pitching you something. Not a product, not a worldview, not nothin’. (After all, who wants theatre that feels like an encounter with a telemarketer?) And if that feels weird... Well, we’re ok with that. Because to us, it’s also fun and surprising and exciting. And our audiences seem to agree, because you keep coming back. (Hey: thanks, you.) 3) PAY-WHAT-YOU-CAN = EVERYONE GETS TO SEE THE COOL STUFF We had the crazy idea a few years back that we wouldn’t charge preset ticket prices for our shows. Why? Because we believe that no one should be prevented from seeing art because of the price. If you can pay a little more, we hope you will. But if you’ve got only one dollar in your pocket, you’re just as welcome to come on in and see the show. Everybody gets to play, and we think that makes a better game. We bet you agree. --- So that’s what we do. How do we do it? Well, it takes a bunch of time, unrelenting passion, and death-defying dedication. And we’ve got those three in spades. What we don’t have? Giant wads of cash. So that’s where you come in. We have to raise $7,740 to put up our show this fall--and we need at least $2,250 of that to come from this Indiegogo campaign. And that means we need you. Because, though institutional funding is all but dried up, we are bound and determined to keep making the work we believe in. And you know what? It’s pretty nifty that you can throw a bit into the art-making pot and directly support making Phoenix a more interesting place to live. And hey, its tax-deductible, too. Now, that doesn’t mean you all have to give a huge chunk of change. In fact, if you each pitch in even a little bit to this campaign, then due to a wonderful process (we hear it’s called “math”), it’ll add up to enough to make our fall show happen, and then you get to come see it and hang out, and together we’ll carve out a little corner of our city for weird, funny, independent, inclusive, smart theatre. Good stuff, right? So, welcome to crowdfundingland, Orange style. We’ll work our rears off, but we need your help to make it all happen. So please: give what you can if you can, and if you can’t, share this page with your friends and your family and your friends’ family and tell them why were worth supporting. And most importantly, come see the show. Sincerely yours, Orange Theatre Group Purveyors of Fine Experimental Theatre
