Please could people try and understand the reasons behind the choice to use loose substrate. If your vivarium is setup correctly, if you are using correct temps and feeding correct food using the right amount of calcium and vitamins. Have a warm hide and a moist hide, plenty of decoration for shy or easily spooked reptiles. In other words research research and more research. Unless your reptile is very young or ill then there is only a very very small chance of impaction. If you know your pet well and keep an eye on them, keep upto date reports on food and behaviour then the risk is even less. We dont choose to go bio for the look of it we choose it because although our pets where bred in captivity they still have natural instincts to dig climb hunt etc... We feel bio active gives them something to do other than eat poo and sleep!! We could all survive in a small room if our needs where provided, but that does not provide quality of life. We understand worries over impaction but we would rather our pets lived happily for 10yrs as in the wild. Compared to 15yrs of being in a box! Please dont take offence as i only wanted to state that we do not put our pets in a natural viv for its beauty! We are trying to give them as natural an active life as possible. Just as a zoo tries to create a natural habitat for their animals. We understand the reasons behind people preferring plain vivariums and rubs so please try and understand the reasoning behind preferring a natural vivarium or rub.
