When she inherited her Uncle Heathcliff’s 1962 Burns London Shortscale Jazz guitar (rumoured to have belonged to Billy Fury!) aged 16, all those influences came pouring back out in the form of her own original material and has been flowing ever since. Danni met Producer Chris Donohue (The Civil Wars, Elvis Costello, Robert Plant) in London in 2011 through a mutual friend whilst Chris was in the UK playing bass with Emmylou Harris as one of her Red Dirt Boys. The pair hit it off and in December 2012, Danni flew to Nashville to record her debut album with Chris at the helm and some of Nashville’s finest musicians. danninicholls/bio Danni Nicholls Tuesday Night Medicine Show Tue 22/04/2014 Argyll Hotel Argyll Street Ullapool Highlands IV26 2UB 9pm Entry By donation (suggested £8) [email protected] medicinemusic.co.uk 07725793216 Danni Nicholls Tea Posy Saturday Set 2pm Sat 26/04/2014 The Greenhouse 14 High Street Dingwall IV15 9RU By Donation (Sugg. £8) [email protected] medicinemusic.co.uk 07725793216 Danni Nicholls Meet The Folks Sun 27/04/2014 7.30 PM Crystal House Concert Crystal House Retreat Church Brae Strathpeffer Ross-shire Scotland IV14 9AW By Donation (Sugg. £8) [email protected] medicinemusic.co.uk 07725793216 Fraser Anderson Driving Miss Daisy Tour Fraser Anderson is a fellow Scot now living in London who played in Dougie MacLeans band for many years and was inspired by Dougie to make his own music, this is his homecoming tour. John, who had already toured America with his Martin J65-M guitar, was rooted in the Scottish traditional music he had grown up with in Balintore. Sofie comes from the fiddle mecca that is Dalarna in Sweden, but did not take up the fiddle until she fell head over heels in love with The Pogues and moved to Scotland to study biochemistry. Fuelled by classic Americana albums such as Steve Earles The Mountain, John and Sofie delved further into the Celtic connections of American music, and finally relocated to Sweden, where they have been playing music together continuously, both at home and professionally. Our first album together, Western Highways, was released in 2011 and received encouraging reviews from all over Europe. In May and June 2014, we will be touring Scotland in support of our new EP, which will feature original songs and tunes steeped in the Celtic and American styles that influence us. We fill our shows with quality acoustic guitar and fiddle playing, close vocal harmonies, and of course the good Highland craic. johnandsofie/band_bio/ John Mitchell & Sofie Johnson Tuesday Night Medicine Show Tue 03/06/2014 Argyll Hotel Argyll Street Ullapool Highlands IV26 2UB 9pm Entry By donation (suggested £8) [email protected] medicinemusic.co.uk 07725793216 John Mitchell & Sofie Jonsson The Tea Posy Open Mic Music Night Thu 05/06/2014 7.30 pm The Greenhouse 14 High Street Dingwall IV15 9RU By Donation (Sugg. £8) [email protected] medicinemusic.co.uk 07725793216 John Mitchell & Sofie Jonsson (Supp. The Slim Panatellas) Roots & Cheroots Fri 06/06/2014 IG:Lu Art gallery 19 Church Street Inverness 19 Church St, IV1 1DZ 7.30 pm Tickets £8 [email protected] medicinemusic.co.uk 07725793216 Sophie Bancroft & Tom Lyne Heralding from one of Britains top jazz families with brothers Tom and Phil Bancroft , Sophie is also involved with singer-songwriters from the indie world, folk musicians and hardcore traditional musicians, all of whom influence her writing and performance. Absorbing these disparate styles, her writing and live performance have developed into a particularly natural sound, sitting together beautifully as a whole without needing to pull apart the different influences, thus allowing the listener to just get on and listen! Her music, though not deliberately complex harmonically, has a refreshing richness and depth. In the early part of her career she performed as a jazz vocalist around Britain and Europe at major jazz festivals and clubs, and on regular broadcasts for BBC Radio 2 and Radio Scotland. She then moved south to take up post as Britain’s first Jazz Education Development Officer, during which time she honed her skills as a songwriter and a music educator. On her return back to Scotland in 1993, Sophie has gone on to have a highly successful career as a singer-songwriter performing, broadcasting and recording her own compositions with a unique blend of jazz, folk, country and pop influences. Forays in to the world of electronic music have led to her songs being used on US hit TV shows such as ‘Six Feet Under, several reaching top 10 slots in various dance charts as well as a performance at the esteemed South By Southwest Music Festival 2001 in Texas, whilst her acoustic songs are being recorded and performed by various artistes throughout Europe. A publishing deal with Bug Music in Los Angeles and various song representation contracts with other labels and music libraries in the USA have followed. Sophie has released 5 albums to critical acclaim on her own label, LisaLeo Records. Described as gorgeous acoustic music, her new CD ‘Bird of Paradise, released in October 2010 has been written over the last few years. Featuring songs that look at lifes cameos from a feminine perspective, Sophies writing is now reflecting a more settled period in her life where she is experiencing her children growing up, her relationships becoming more long-term and having to scroll further down the drop-down menus to find her year of birth online. Several of the songs have been co-written with lyricist Dave Gill and poet Gaia Holmes as well as the song ‘Caroline co-written and recorded with renowned singer-songwriter Boo Hewerdine , writer of hits such as Eddie Readers ‘Patience Of Angels. Recorded with a sonic rawness and honesty, the CDs listener has a sense of being in the same room as the band. The music is ultimately wrapped in Sophies voice, her intimate acoustic guitar, and accompaniment from her band featuring double bassist Tom Lyne , fiddler Amy Geddes and guitarist/percussionist Ross Mitson . As well as concerts under her own name, Sophies performance work also includes gigs with accordionist virtuoso Martin Green’s innovative band The Green Machine, has supported guitar legend Bert Jansch at the ABC in Glasgow tours and worked in the compelling duo The Two Tall Girls with Canadian cellist, Christine Hanson, whilst maintaining her connection with the jazz world singing alongside award-winning jazz vocalists Liane Caroll and Barbara Morrison as well as the jazz legend Fionna Duncan, during the Glasgow and Edinburgh International Jazz Festivals. Sophie is one of the most in-demand jazz vocal teachers in Britain, with a very busy private tuition schedule as well as being a regular tutor at the RSAMD, City Of Edinburgh Music School, University of Strathclyde, University of Newcastle and one of the main workshop leaders in the Fionna Duncan Vocal Jazz Workshops and the Mediterranean Jazz School. She also leads song-writing workshops in secondary schools around Scotland.
