Please find below press release from North Devon Council: Ilfracombe fishermens stores project gets go ahead A project to improve facilities for Ilfracombes fishermen and improve health and safety at the harbour has been given the go-ahead. At yesterdays North Devon Council Executive meeting (Tuesday 2 September), councillors approved £250,000 funding for the project to build four fishermens storage units on the Cove. The project has already attracted half of its funding from the Marine Management Organisation. The scheme had to be scaled down a little after a funding bid to the Coastal Communities Fund was unsuccessful, but it will still see the lock-up stores built and the cliff face stabilised. The new one-storey building will enhance the appearance of the quayside and will clear the area of fishing equipment, which is currently causing health and safety concerns. Lead Member for the Economy Cllr Malcolm Prowse says: This is a tremendous boost to the Ilfracombe economy. Not only will it be a great help to the fishermen, but it will make the whole harbour area an even more pleasant place to visit. Malcolm Wilkinson from the Ilfracombe Harbour Board says: This is another exciting step in delivering the Ilfracombe Harbour Board Development Strategy, which will support our local, hardworking fishing community. A revised planning application will now be submitted, with approval needed before work can begin.
