Please have a look at this event - looks interesting Amnesty Internationals UNSW Campus group and the House of Welcome* are hosting a hands-on cooking session led by refugees, where guests will create recipes from Bangladesh, Iran and Egypt. Three chefs - asylum seekers/refugees from various countries - will share their cuisines and an inspirational Iranian speaker will share her experiences with us. We will gather in groups of up to 10 to learn and help with the preparation, then we’ll all get together for a delicious dinner including dessert. Some of the food prepared will also be packaged to go out to those in need. All are welcome but tickets need to be purchased prior to the event. Limited places are available and can be purchased via eventbrite: https://eventbrite.au/e/unsw-amnesty-international-cooking-class-tickets-12327637295. We think events like this are important because they show the human face of refugee issues. Its very easy to get caught up in the politics and media portrayal of asylum seekers so its crucial for people to understand that asylum seekers have much to bring to their new communities in Australia. It breaks down barriers on both sides and creates greater awareness of the circumstances that have caused people to come to Australia. Please let us know if you require further information. Thank you. Regards, Jessica Provost Vice President **House of Welcome is the largest housing provider of transitional accommodation for asylum seekers and refugees in NSW and the only asylum seeker specialist agency in Western Sydney. houseofwelcome.au
