Please help if you can :) So this week we visited a specialist veterinary opthamologist with our pup Rufus who is 6 months old. This was due to reoccurring red eyes and issues with his third eyelid swelling coming out and causing irritation. Our vet didnt have a clue and thought it was a conjunctivitis type issue. We sadly found out he has congenital cataracts and is near blind in the one eye and has a little loss in the other. We were shocked and very upset, Rufus had done a grand job of covering up his blindness as its all he has ever known. No breeder, vet or trainer had picked up in it. In fact we were told by trainers that Rufus had dominance and aggressive behavioural issues, which we personally believed were actually due to fear but we couldnt quite work it out. His poor behaviour actually is genuinely from fear due to his lack of vision. Myself and Dan Willett feel relieved that we have finally cracked the behaviour mystery but oh so saddened that it is because of blindness. We are now having to take the decision whether to operate to try and give him better sight, however the recovery is hard and Rufus must remain calm and stress free for weeks to recover properly. If anyone has had any experiences of this type of operation with a Samoyed we would be grateful to hear about it. Money is not an issue we want Rufus to be the happiest and healthiest he can be without causing too much discomfort or distress to get there.
