SNAP Advocacy What you need to know about the Farm Bill and how you can impact the fate of SNAP The farm bill is an all encompassing bill that helps farmers, stabilizes food prices and ensures adequate food supply. It also regulates foreign food aid as well as domestic food assistance and nutrition programs. It is renewed every 5 years by Congress and is up for renewal this year. Currently, funding for essential nutrition and food assistance programs is at risk of being cut tremendously. With an unstable economy, cutting funding now would be detrimental. A loss of funding would hurt those who are trying to make ends meet under the pressure of falling wages and poor job creation. At this moment, Congress is in recess. When they return in September the farm bill is sure to be a highly debated and highly contentious topic. We urge you to contact our representation in Washington and ask them to protect food assistance and nutrition programs and to continue to support a comprehensive farm bill that contains funding for nutrition programs. Contact our representatives (see below) in Washington and let them know the importance of nutrition assistance programs in their local communities. Talking points have been provided by Feeding America to help you shape your message to our legislators.
