Please read. Craig LaPine gets it exactly right in these Oct. 11 thoughts on the gubernatorial election: In The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald introduces Tom & Daisy Buchanan by saying, They … drifted here and there unrestfully wherever people played polo and were rich together. What’s hinted here—and borne out by the arc of the story—is that the Buchanans lead lives without consequences. They drift amidst half-baked philosophies and misguided, self-serving passions, and their privilege so completely shifts the costs of their mistakes to others that they never even have to confront that they’ve been mistaken. At the risk of offending friends and colleagues, it is this line from Gatsby that lately pops into my head whenever I see an Eliot Cutler endorsement—because it is almost invariably displayed on a fancy German SUV or high priced Swedish station wagon or on the lawn of stately suburban home. As Cutler faces absolutely certain defeat [on Nov. 4] (and lets not pretend that he doesnt), I can’t help drawing the conclusion that those most ardently supporting his candidacy will suffer none of the worst effects if his presence on the ballot leads to a second LePage term. For the record, I don’t agree that a vote for Cutler represents some kind of commendable independence of mind. I unequivocally believe Mike Michaud for Governor is the best choice. But I get that some are persuaded by Cutler’s record of accomplishments, his polished and thoughtful rhetoric, and his big hearted philanthropy. But the fact remains that the Cutler campaign has become a vanity exercise: He cannot win. So if you are thinking of voting for Cutler in the name of some ideological purity, I urge you to consider the people most likely to pay the price. And if you have access to a quality diet, quality educational opportunities, and quality health care you can afford, you arent one of those people. #ilikemike.
