Now the Wynnum community is rallying around the truck driver and former Wynnum Vikings and Seagulls player on his road to recovery with a charity event in early September. Mr Shorten was flown to the PA Hospital with extensive injuries suffered on the return trip from a truck driving job in Toowoomba on May 23. The accident at Hatton Vale left Mr Shorten, 55, in a coma for four weeks with severe injuries which resulted in both his legs being amputated below the knees. His wife Lyn said doctors told their family he might not survive in the hours after the crash. But since then Mr Shorten’s recovery has astounded doctors, his family and friends, she said. “It was touch and go for four weeks. We took every day as it came. We said ‘he has made it through this day’,” she said. Mr Shorten said the support of his wife motivated him to push through rehabilitation at the PA Hospital. “She has been my rock of Gibraltar. She works every day and comes up and sees me,” he said. Mr Shorten said he was pleased with his recovery and was aiming to return home in a month’s time. “They were amazed because I was on my death bed. They called the family up because it didn’t look good.” As Mr Shorten prepares to head home, his long-time friend Mark Hunter is organising a charity event to help the Shorten family modify their home and buy an electric wheelchair. Mrs Shorten said the goodwill shown by the community was overwhelming. “We didn’t realise how many good hearts are out there,” she said. Join in the fundraiser for Mr Shorten to aid in his recovery on September 6 The fund raiser will be held at Kitchener Park in the Wynnum Manly Junior Rugby League club grounds at the corner of Stradbroke and West Avenues from 10am to 5pm.
