This Article was published in The Grenadian Voice on November 26th, 1994 DURING THE past 22 months both the Government and the Nutmeg Association (GCNA) have worked very hard to take the Nutmeg Industry from financial collapse to survival by January, 1993 and now to some degree of financial strength. Late 1993 the NDC Government found a new Marketing Partner for the GCNA when there were thousands of bags of nutmeg stored all over the Island, as nutmeg prices and sales FELL in the early 90s. Because of this New Marketing Agreement, the GCNA was able to Increase their nutmeg sales in 1994. The advance price of 30 cents per pound for nutmegs which Farmers in Grenada have been receiving for years is accepted by all to be too low. Nevertheless our Farmers endured ad continued to produce over the years. In response to this effort and in consideration of the condition of nutmeg farmers, the NDC Government and the GCNA Board agreed to make a Special Price incentive and Income support payment of four Million dollars to nutmeg growers for 1994. Two Million Dollars of this will come from Grenada Stabex earnings for the 1991 year of the entitlement, the other two million dollars will come from the GCNA operations. This clearly shows the benefit that can be derived and enjoyed when a Concerned Government and a body like the GCNA work closely in partnership to save an industry and put money in Farmers pockets. It is an outstanding example of good management by Government and the GCNA. Finally it is important to note that this four million dollars will help stimulate Grenadas economy and give thousands of our people a brighter Christmas. This is not the first time the NDC Government has come to the Rescue of the Nutmeg farmers. Onward to a prosperous future with the NDC.
