Dear Rt Hon Mr Keith Vaz, I am writing to you in your capacity as Chair/member of the Home Affairs Committee. I am writing on behalf of Yashika Bageerathi. As you may have seen, there has been an intense campaign to oppose her deportation and free her from Yarls Wood Detention Centre so that she can continue her education and take her A-levels in a few weeks time. I believe her case raises serious questions about the behaviour and conduct of the immigration services, and that they seem to have a one size fits all policy, whether dealing with schoolgirls, suspected terrorists or criminals. In Yashikas case, leaving aside whether she should have the right to remain in this country in the long term, the questions are: - Does the decision to remove her from the UK so close to exams really serve the public interest? - What harm would be done by letting her and her siblings complete the school year and take their exams? - Does the action of the minister, in detaining Yashika and removing her so suddenly, seem like reasonable action in line with her legitimate expectation? - What evidence do the authorities have that the threat to her and her family (which caused them to flee in the first place) has subsided? - Why is it necessary to hold her in Yarls Wood? Is she considered a threat to public? - Why is it necessary to separate her from her family? While appreciating that the immediate circumstances surrounding Yashika are not the committees concern, we respectfully request that the committee consider asking these questions of the witnesses, as we believe they illuminate serious shortcomings in the immigration service that bring this country into disrepute, and results in inhumane treatment of innocent people. The public response to the treatment of Yashika is unprecedented and there is a clear public interest in seeing these questions answered. It surely should give the Home Office and the immigration authorities pause for thought when their actions unite just about everyone from across the political spectrum, from Labour councillors, to her local Conservative MP and Party, to UKIP. What is more, there clearly needs to be a system which allows for the treatment of different types of people reasonably, according to circumstances. We trust you will use the presence of the minister at the committee hearing to put some of these questions to him. So many people await a response on this issue. Yours sincerely
