Via Tsahi Shemesh: About a week ago, while I was on my way to the office (100st & Broadway, NYC) I heard a glass breaks from the other side of the street, then screaming for help. I saw a group of kids hitting an obese woman with a cane. She was desperately asking for help. Around her, quite a few people and no one offered her help or called the police (which is located one block away!). I ran across the street and broke the fight, only then I realized this group of kids was after her son (about 16y old, strong and athletic). He got a severe concussion a moment before. When I got to him, he was vomiting (while fighting). As much as I wanted to do justice with the mom and her son, and hit those 4 other kids, I didnt. Its not my place and not my fight. But I wouldnt be able to live with myself if I werent helping them out. I called the police, and I tried to isolate the son and protect him, but then, they were hitting his mom, hard, with his leather belt. Now, at this point we are about 3-4 min in, and NOBODY helped them. The mom was willing to accept the beating as long as her son is safe. When he saw them hitting her, he ran back to protect her. I did too. I was thinking of my mother, and I knew I would have done the same as this boy, and felt bad not being able to protect them both. It crossed my mind many times, to hit those punks and teach them a lesson. They werent trained; they were just crazy, uneducated and disrespectful. I waited until the police came (about 10 minute!), then went to work. Feeling I havent done enough. I know I have done the RIGHT / SMART thing, but it doesnt feel so right. Theres so much more I have to say about it. So much more. I am writing this post, angry at those kids, mad at the other bystanders who did nothing to help a weak person in a need. Moreso the society we are living in, everyone for themselves. Be the change you want to see in the world.
