!!! Please read this !!! *** This is mainly for people living in Pune *** A Harrier in the middle of the city The presence of this grassland bird in the city proves how good the grasslands on our citys hills are. Now i know that planting trees sounds like a good thing to do. But please do not reduce the already scanty grasslands we have in and around our city by planting too many trees which might transform these beautiful grasslands into woodlands. Many globally threatened grassland species visit Punes hills due to the grass. Please do not ignore grasslands. Protect them. The grasslands here are so good that some weeks back a Lesser Florican(Endangered-approx. 1500 birds left) was sighted on one of the hills which is in the middle of the city. I get scared when locals start talking about eco-park projects etc. These city hills already are home to more than a hundred bird species - mostly grassland species which do not require many trees. They need good grass which hosts a lot of insects, reptiles, mammals etc. We will just be disturbing the wildlife by making any modifications to the grasslands on these hills. Most of the hills also have Gliricidia planted on them which is useless. If i was in charge i would have appointed qualified people to restore the grassland habitat in parts where Gliricidia is present. Some popular hills in Pune - Vetal tekdi(A.R.A.I. Hills/Hanuman Tekdi), Baner Hill(Tukai tekdi), Taljai(Pachgaon Parvati), etc. Oh btw, the bird in this photograph is a Montagus Harrier which breeds in parts of Europe and central Asia & winters in Africa and India. Harriers are regularly seen in winters on these hills in Pune city.
