Please read this, it is very important to me! Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night. That is my gift to you, a good night. You see, I work in an Emergency Room and Ill be here all night long on Christmas Eve. Im not saying this for you to feel sorry for me, Im telling you this as part of my gift to you. Us emergency workers (police, fireman, EMS, soldiers and ER personnel), we understood that this was part of the job when we signed up for it. But, its a calling. Youd be hard pressed to find most us with a personality that would even fit a nine to five mind set. We often miss family functions and special events, but its a sacrifice that were willing to make. I could tell you that most of us are thick skinned and jaded to the point where it doesnt bother us, but that would be a lie. Even now, as I sit here writing this, Im reminded of my wife and kiddos having a wonderful Christmas Eve at my mother-in-laws. Again, not looking for pitty, just explaining my gift to you. Ill be here at the ER all night long, holding a vigil in the dark and cold while all across the land children sleeps with visions of sugar plums in their dreams. Police are scanning the streets, looking for the dregs of society while you toast your honey with a glass of chardonnay by a crackling fire. As the little children awaken to the joy of a visit from Santa himself, there is a soldier in some undisclosed loaction clionging to his rifle, daring the things that go bump in the night to move. Were here, all of us. Keeping you safe. Keeping you safe, keeping you secure. If you get sick, stub your toe or even have a heart attack on this most holy of nights, dont worry. Ive got this. I promise, well catch you if you fall. So you can rest soundly, Im here. That is my gift to you. Merry Christmas to you, and to you, a good night.
