Please share... A new report from the Annie E. Casey Foundation, “The First Eight Years,” documents how many children in the U.S. are failing to meet developmental goals in four areas: cognitive knowledge and skills; social and emotional development, engagement in school, and physical well-being. The percentage of children from low-income households lagging developmental goals is even higher. For example 50% of children in higher-income households are on track in the development of cognitive and knowledge skills, but only 19% of children in low-income households are on track in that area. The report emphasizes the interrelationships among all four areas. “For children to succeed,” the report reads, “we must first dispel the notion that classroom learning is isolated from other aspects of child development. Then we must create opportunities for children to develop the full array of competencies that they need to thrive.” While the report talks extensively about early childhood, it also emphasizes the need for schools to support the “full range of social, emotional and cognitive development” for students in first, second and third grades. There’s no question about the magnitude and urgency of the need. It seems like the time is right to try interventions for cognitive skill development, such as that provided by BrainWare SAFARI, on a much larger scale. aecf.org/KnowledgeCenter/Publications.aspx?pubguid=%7BC1FB5F12-3394-4F79-9BF7-549F73DC7CA6%7D #education #scholarships #education #neuroscience #cognitive
