Please share! Physical Punishment and Mental Disorders: Results From a Nationally Representative US Sample Research Team- T. Afifi (PhD Community Health Science), N. Mota (Master’s Psychology), P. Dasiewicz (Master’s Family Social Science), H. MacMillan (MD Dept. of Psychiatry & Behavioural Neurosciences), J. Sareen (MD Dept of Community Health Science, Psychiatry, Psychology). Background- Few studies have examined the relationship between physical punishment & a wide range of mental disorders in a nationally representative sample. The current research investigated the possible link between harsh physical punishment in the absence of more severe child maltreatment. CONCLUSION: Harsh physical punishment in the absence of child mal-treatment is associated with mood disorders, anxiety disorders, substance abuse/dependence, and personality disorders in a general population sample.
