Please take a moment to read this heart warming story from one of Madison & Companys very own Brokers, Dan Nelson. Way to pay it forward, Dan!! My girlfriend Jami and I volunteer with a foundation called the Friends of Barnabas Foundation (fobf.org) that provides free health care, primarily to children, in underserved areas of Honduras. The program that we are involved with is called the Little Hearts Project. This project provides free surgeries, both open heart and cardiac catheterizations, to children with congenital heart defects. Additionally, for the past six years the FOBF has been working to build a permanent pediatric cardiac surgery wing in The Ruth Paz Foundation Hospital that is operated by Hondurans for the children of Honduras. We traveled to San Pedro Sula, Honduras on the 17th of September and went right to work building an operating room, intensive care unit, and pharmacy in the Ruth Paz Foundation Hospital. We spent two weeks there as non-medical support for the team. I acted as the teams pharmacist, and Jami as the teams accountant. Twenty-three children received successful surgical procedures, and they are all now recovering at home or at the Barnabas House in Pena Blanca. We began working with FOBF in 2012. Since then weve had the opportunity to host three babies that traveled to Denver with their mothers for open heart surgery. Dr. Steve Leonard, along with his awesome team at the Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children, performs these surgeries pro bono. Many of these same people, including Dr. Leonard, are deeply involved in the great work of the FOBF, specifically The Little Hearts Project, along with The Rocky Mountain Childrens Health Foundation and Fundacion Ruth Paz.
