“Pleasure is, and must remain, a side-effect or by-product,and is destroyed and spoiled to the degree to which it is made a goal in itself.” -Victor Frankel- obviously i have never been in a concentration camp, but I have spent a lot of years in jails, prisons, and institutions. one year I was having an especially hard time around Christmas, I was going to the church to just get some spiritual relief and I found a broken off piece of a pine Christmas tree on the ground. I stuck it down my pants (which was quite prickly) and smuggled it back in to my cell. for the whole month I would gather aluminum from my pancakes at breakfast in the mornings to make tinny ornaments and color them with a sharpie in different shapes and colors. soon other inmates would bring by little candies warped like presents etc and finding pleasure in my simple broken branch. right before Christmas I snipped a light from one of the trees at the church and smuggled that back to my cell too so that on Christmas eve I used the adapter from someones Walkman to light my little tree. I fully expected to get in trouble from the guards but they let me be the whole night. pleasure is a side effect of the things we go through while trying to seek plesure
