Plenary indulgences announced for Year of Consecrated Life The Vatican has announced that plenary indulgences will be available to the faithful who—under the usual conditions—participate in celebrations for the Year of Consecrated Life. In a decree signed by Cardinal Mauro Piacenza, the head of the Apostolic Penitentiary, the Vatican announced on November 28 that the indulgences can be obtained by those who join in meetings organized by the Holy See in Rome to celebrate the Year of Consecrated Life. The faithful may also obtain the indulgence in their own dioceses by visiting a cathedral or other sacred space and reciting the Liturgy of the Hours or making a “suitable” period of prayer, on one of the days devoted to the celebrations. The Year of Consecrated Life begins on the November 30, the first Sunday of Advent; and concludes on February 2, 2016. The ordinary conditions for obtaining a plenary indulgence are sacramental Confession, reception of the Eucharist, prayer for the intentions of the Pope, and removal of all attachment to sin. In the November 28 decree, the Vatican urges priests of all institutes of consecrated life to make themselves available to hear confessions, so that the faithful may receive the indulgences.
