Pliny the Elder, after working a good part of the night, he would arise at dawn to attend the Emperor. After a light breakfast, he would lie in the sun while a secretary read to him. His sun bath was followed by a cold plunge. Then he lunched and took a short nap. As soon as he awoke, he resumed his studies. During the dinner hour, a secretary read while Pliny ate. Every book he used to say, no matter how bad, contained some fragment of merit, something worth remembering. Even when he went abroad, Pliny had a secretary by his side reading aloud. Thus by using every waking moment to best advantage, by budgeting his time, by maintaining a rigorous schedule of work and self-discipline, he was able to produce more then 100 volumes, including his record of the honey bee during the 56 years of his life. In 79 A.D. the eruption of Vesuvius which wiped out Pompeii brought death to pliny.
