Podcast: Gray Whale Calves Born in Big Numbers NOAA Fisheries scientists keep track of how many gray whale calves are born each winter, and it looks like this year was a banner year for calf production. Learn more in this interview with NOAA biologist Wayne Perryman in the latest episode of NOAA Fisheries podcast series, On the Line. fisheries.noaa.gov/podcasts/2014/07/gray_whale_calf_survey.html#.U9l3fFe9V5O This lines up with our own gray whale sightings this year. We had more encounters this season than any prior year! Unfortunately many of the calves, up to 35% according to estimates, will be the victim of killer whale attacks. But this is still very good news and we hope for more memorable gray whale sightings again come winter.
