Poem by Quentin: Something Wonderful Has Happened “I could not hear all the words” He said. But I knew they were angry, especially my mom. To a child, it was cold sweat terrifying. I thought a lot about it actually: how to make love last. I developed theories." "I did too!” She said. “And I listened to the the girls at the factory talk endlessly of their marital disillusionments. We must pool our theories to write a thin book given at weddings: "How to Make Love Last." She was silent for a long moment. "Written by two lovers who have not married, not loved long, have not even ....... " Something disturbed her train of thought. He had never seen this before and watched carefully. "The perfect authors," she continued, "we will be like academics who write about the outside world." "It’s all right." He said. "We will rely on our powers of observation. We might get lucky." The fire died down, became a city seen from a mile high. The woods moved into mystery and danger. They walked slowly to her car. She was in a spry mood and playfully pulled the hair on his arm. She took uneven steps to see of he could guess what she would do next. He usually could. "You know," she said. "Something wonderful has happened since I have known you. Something I would have been very incomplete without." "Tell me about it!" Off in the far distance, farm dogs called to each other. Owls haunted darker woods down by the river. Life itself on the planet earth paused to reflect for a moment, take a breath of cool night air, and, and....idle. All the turning wheels of life rested everywhere. People on planet earth used this occasion to smile to each other. She put her lips close to his ear. "I have loved." She said very slowly. "I have loved .... I have loved."
