Poetry Slam Thursday March 6th at 7pm “Man gave name to all the animals.” By Ellen Clark I’ve incorporated a little bit of everything from Africa and, in particular, Zimbabwe in my slam poetry! There is the element of Shona Praise Poetry, a little bit of Contemporary Slam Poetry and a little bit of Rap! A description of each artistic element (i.e. “genre”) is discussed in the paragraph below. A portion of my slam is taken from Bob Dillon’s song Man Gave Names to all the Animals—at least the chorus and the rhyme about the snake. All the other parts are mine. In the poem, we are actually giving thanks that we have all these animals and in the last rhyme we are thanking all the kids who come to the Zimbabwe Run for helping others. In essence it is a Praise Poem performed not only by me but also by the actors who play all the animals. Also, an African drum in a steady slow beat keeps the rhythm going and during the chorus, each animal does a dance to the beat of the drum. During the chorus, there is audience participation with their recitation of the chorus. Here’s the chorus: Man gave names to all the animals In the beginning, in the beginning Man gave names to all the animals In the beginning, long time ago. The “Sign Slam” (Where each individual holds up a letter)—We’ve been doing that for a number of years at assemblies. It will be done after “Man Gave Names to all the Animals”.
