Pohick Church, in the Lorton section of Fairfax County. My wife, - TopicsExpress

Pohick Church, in the Lorton section of Fairfax County. My wife, whose material grandfather is buried there, and I visited a couple of weeks ago. The place has quite a history. Christ Church, in Alexandria, likes to claim to have been George Washingtons home church. However, many feel that the honor belongs to Pohick Church. In researching Washingtons background, I discovered that both he and George Mason were instrumental in having the church built. The legend is that the building is situated exactly halfway between Mount Vernon and Gunston Hall (Masons home) so that neither would have to ride further than the other to get to church. I havent been able to find any factual evidence to that story, but it gets the attention of 6th graders. In my opinion, Mason was as important a figure in early American history as was Washington. Due to his belief that the Constitution gave unrealistic power to a central government and did not include a bill of rights, he did not sign his name to The Constitution. It was Masons Virginia Constitution and his Virginia Declaration of Rights that influenced Jeffersons draft of the United States Constitution.
