Point 7 of 10 Note: If you haven’t seen the previous points then go back to earlier postings, the first one being on 14/08/2013. To be successful at anything you want to achieve in life there are 4 principles you must adhere to: 1) You must want to do it. The desire for success must come from you. If you are only doing something because someone else wants you to do it you will probably fail. For example, if your mother wants you to learn to play the violin but you don’t want to, you will probably fail. If your partner wants you to get married and you do so only to please your partner, what do you think the chances are of that being a successful marriage? 2) You must be committed to it. You must follow the plan set out for you and follow it completely. For example, if you want to make the Olympic swimming team and your coach has drawn up a training schedule that requires you to be at the pool by 6am, six mornings per week but you only want to attend four mornings per week and not start until 7am, what do you think the chances of success will be? 3) You must be prepared to make sacrifices. This is probably the hardest of the 4 principles to adhere to. No success comes without sacrifice, and sometimes that means huge sacrifices. Budgeting is a really good example here. If you are spending all your income, and more, (by spending on your credit cards to their limit), how on Earth will you be able to turn your finances around without sacrificing some of your spending? However, to be able to turn your finances around you need a plan to follow – a budget – to which you must be fully committed. 4) You must persevere with it. Perseverance brings to mind, not only persistence, but also some hardship. For example, a mountain climber who wants to climb Mount Everest must do so by taking one agonizing step at a time, but every step he takes brings him closer to his goal. Budgeting is no different. If you really want to have money free worries, and you commit yourself to your budget, and you make all the necessary sacrifices, and you continue with it week in week out, month in month out, year in year out, you will turn your finances around and become financially independent which will release you from being a slave to someone else’s money (debt) to becoming the master of your money (savings). Throughout my book – ‘My Budget Mate’ mybudgetmate – I mention these 4 principles for success numerous times as they are your key to success. Keep watching this space for Point 8 of 10 where I will tell you why I have written a book and not a computer program as I am often asked this question. John R Small (Author of ‘My Budget Mate’).
