Polaa Pillaiyaar in Tamil-Saiva Tradition. The popular Form of the Lord having an Elephant Head has come to be known by numerous names such as Gannabadhi, Vinnaayagar, Ganesha, etc., with Polaa Pillaiyaar and Aindhu Karathanai being pure Tamil names. How is Polaa Pillaiyaar viewed in Tamil Tradition according to Tamil Scripture? There are various stories which have surfaced as to the appearance of Gannabadhi but to know the Tamil idea of His Manifestation, we can go to the Thirukadaikaappu (Nyaanasambandhar Dhehvaaram) by Thiru Nyaanasambandha Naayanaar who states that, Sivaperumaan assumed the Form of a Male Elephant and Umai Ammai, a Female Elephant, and Merged into One to Form our Protector Gannabadhi, in order to rid Devotees of Their misery; the verse is as follows: பிடியதன் உருவுமை கொளமிகு கரியது வடிகொடு தனதடி வழிபடும் அவரிடர் கடிகண பதிவர அருளினன் மிகுகொடை வடிவினர் பயில்வலி வலமுறை யிறையே. Pidiyadhan Uruvumai Kollamigu Kariyadhu Vadikodu Thanathadi Vazhipadum Avaridar Kadiganna Badhivara Arullinan Migukodai Vadivinar Payilvali Valamurrai Yirraiyeh Sivaperumaan represents Cognitive Power and Umai Ammai represents the Conative Power. As per this, Pillaiyaar is none other than a Manifestation of Sivaperumaan’s Divine Grace (Sathi). In the (re)creation of the universe, Sivaperumaan makes His Conative Power to act on Maayai (the material cause of the universe/the entity from which the universe including our bodies are made). The explosive sound from the spinning action as a result of the impact is attributed to Pillaiyaar. The expansion of light with the growth and evolution of the universe is attributed to Muruga Perumaan. This is represented by the symbol likened to the digit ‘2’ that is seen in most Tamil works appearing at the top of the cover or first page. This tradition is in contrast and a refutation to various distortions that have arisen from Aryan beliefs, which impose traits of humans onto God.
