Police Brutality cases in Mauritius are not well known among Mauritians because such cases are most of the time covered up by the Mauritius Police Force. Of course, such matters will be harmful to the MPF’s reputation as well as Mauritius Island’s pride and it is assured that these cases do not reach the hands of journalists. The main recurring police officers that have been complained against such acts will most of the time be sourcing from the Central Flacq Police Station, Abercrombie Police Station, Baie du Tombeau Police Station and even more… Well, if the list should have been completed, it will be clear that it is simpler to refer to the Mauritius Police Force. The first complaint that was filed at the beginning of year 2002 under the file number HRC/1/02/12 is the most astonishing one. There will be an allegation against the bodyguard of a Minister for molesting, ill treatment and humiliation in public. This may be stunning but the other cases that have been filed till now are all of the same degree. They will all be similar in a way or another, implying arrogance, insults, vulgarism, unprofessional procedures, brutalization, assaults by fisticuffs and kicks all over the body, some leading to fractured hand and legs and even some bringing up to dead body of detained person found without any explanation. We’ll never hear about it because they are COVERED UP! There are even some complainants who were beaten up and forced to sign on statements that they had never given. The next paragraph is an extract from the file number HRC/1/02/109 . [stextbox id="info"]“On the 19th of October 2002, the complainant went to Phoenix Police Station to give a statement against a shopkeeper who insulted him. Alleged the police officer talked to him rudely when taking the statement because complainant addressed him as “policier” instead of “Sergeant”. He refused to sign the statement as it was not correct. On his saying “la police n’a pas change et ne changera jamais”, two police officers started to beat him. He had to swear that he would not pursue the matter in order to be released. He attended hospital for treatment where he was issued PF 58.[/stextbox]
