Police are appealing for public assistance following an armed robbery at a service station in Smithfield overnight. Just before midnight (Saturday 10 May 2014), a man entered the service station on the Cumberland Highway and threatened the attendant with a knife. The man fled the location a short time later with cash and was last seen running north along Little Street. The attendant was not injured during the incident. Officers from Fairfield Local Area Command were called and launched an investigation. Police and specialist officers from the Dog Unit conducted an extensive search of the surrounding area but the man was not found. A crime scene was established at the location and examined by specialist forensic officers. Inquiries into the matter are continuing and police would like to speak to a man who may be able to assist in the investigation. The man is described as being of Mediterranean/ Middle Eastern appearance, about 30-35 years of age, around 175cm tall, unshaven, with a solid build. He was last seen wearing a black hooded zip up jumper with a striped shirt underneath, beige shorts and a grey cap. Anyone who knows the identity of the man or has any information that could assist police is urged to come forward.
